The North Carolina State University Park Scholarship and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Morehead Award are two of the nation's premiere independent undergraduate scholarship programs.
Park Scholarship Nominees
Five Dare County seniors have been endorsed by their high schools to apply for one of approximately 50 Park scholarships to North Carolina State University. The Park is a competitive merit scholarship is awarded to entering freshmen who demonstrate exceptional academic ability, character, and leadership qualities. The scholarship includes the full cost of education, related expenses, and enrichment activities.
First Flight High School Park Scholarship nominees are Katlin Allsbrook and Hope Hendricks.
Katlin is the daughter of Mike and Sharon Allsbrook of Kitty Hawk. Katlin is the managing editor of the FFHS Nighthawk News, a member of the "Phytofinders" Plankton Research group, founding member and officer of the Leo club, a member of the Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee, and plays varsity soccer. She intends to major in biology, with an eye on a career in medicine.
Hope is the daughter of Robert and Gail Hendricks, also of Kitty Hawk. She is content editor of the FFHS Nighthawk News, president of the school chapter SADD club, and volunteers at the Community Care Clinic of Dare. Hope looks to a career in medicine beginning with a biology major.
Morehead Award Nominees
The Morehead Award is an all expenses paid scholarship for four years of undergraduate study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Selection criteria for this merit-based scholarship include leadership ability, academic achievement, character and athleticism. Approximately 40 of these prestigious scholarships are awarded each year.
First Flight High School and Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies each have two students vying for a 2008 UNCCH Morehead Award.
FFHS seniors Alex Munden and Austen Stovall will contend at regional competition for the Morehead.
Alex is the daughter of Stacey and Angel Munden of Kitty Hawk. Alex is the president of the FFHS National Honor Society, PULSE Captain, SGA officer for three years, and plays varsity basketball and softball. (PULSE, Peers Uniting Leadership, Success and Excellence, is a new club made up of leaders in the school whose goal is to mold the school climate and increase attendance at school events.) Alex plans to major in pre-med.
Austen Stovall is the daughter of Jerry and Peggy Stovall of Kill Devil Hills. She is the president of FFHS Key Club, member of "Phytofinders" Plankton Research group and plays varsity tennis. Austen plans to major in marine biology.
In addition to academic strengths, each of these nine capable students hold strong work ethics and have demonstrated remarkable commitment to their communities to be among this elite group of Dare County students. All best to them as they enter regional competition.
