Two Dare County Schools rising juniors have been invited to attend the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham - Madelaine Katz, First Flight High School, and Roland Cady, Manteo High School. Opened in 1980, NCSSM is the world's first public, residential high school for juniors and seniors. NCSSM is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system and is located in downtown Durham. NCSSM provides a specialized curriculum in the areas of math, science and technology.
First Flight High School student Madelaine Katz says "Acceptance into Science and Math was the best news I have ever heard. Going to a school where everyone shares the same passion for learning and science I think will prove to be the place where I belong. I look forward to friendships I will make, connections with teachers and mentors that will help me grow as a learner, and the fantastic array of classes unique to this school." Madelaine is a veteran Odyssey of the Mind participant, currently serves as the entertainment editor of the Nighthawk News, is involved with theatre in and outside of school; her volunteer work includes touch tank and related activities at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island. She is the daughter of Laura Katz of Kill Devil Hills and Eric Katz of Alexandria, Virginia.
Manteo High School rising junior Roland Cady is the son of Dr. Lyle E. Cady, Jr. and Marsha-Ribner Cady. Roland has been a Boy Scout for the past decade, last year earning Eagle Scout status. He is a member of the Manteo High School band, math team, and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Cady is most interested in math and science, and having achieved his goal to attend NCSSM, intends to pursue his post-secondary education at UNC Chapel Hill to become a pharmacist.
At NCSSM, Roland and Madelaine will finish out their high school careers.
